Obituary of Amy Lynn (Wirtz) Herrera

On March 9, 2014, our earthly angel, Amy Lynn (Wirtz) Herrera, received her wings.

Family and friends are welcome to a celebration of Amy’s life from 12 to 3 p.m. on March 29, 2014, at Ophir Elementary School, 1372 Lozanos Road, Newcastle, Calif., where Amy volunteered as an art docent and assisted in her children’s school activities.

A sixth-generation Nevada County native, Amy was born Aug. 8, 1976, in Grass Valley, Calif., to MaryTrathen and Douglas Wirtz. Amy grew up immersed in the love of her family. Amy graduated from Nevada Union High School in 1994 and Sierra College in 1999 where she studied science and art.

In 1996, she had her first son, Tanner Hayden. For many years she worked in the health-care field as a medical assistant and X-ray technician.

Amy met and married her love and life partner, Christopher Herrera, in 2003. They had two children — Gauge Thomas (2004) and Cecilia Marie (2006). In her final years, Amy lived in Auburn and was a dedicated mother, a master gardener and the owner of Worm Nation while continuing her love of study and teaching stewardship of the earth.

Amy lived by the motto, “From sunrise to sunset live, laugh, love, forgive.” Her love of life and perpetual optimism touched all whom came into contact with her. Amy’s bright light will shine eternally for her parents, Mary Trathen and Douglas Wirtz; husband, Christopher Herrera; stepdaughter, Ally Herrera; sons Tanner and Gauge; daughter, Cecilia; brother, James Douglas; sister-in-law, Rocky; nephew, Colton; and niece, Kylie.

In lieu of flowers, potted plants and seeds will be appreciated and accepted for her children’s garden in her loving memory.
