An A for effort — displaying the creativity of youth

I got caught sneaking some of my daughter’s art into the recycle bin recently.

It’s not that I don’t want her creative, colorful works.

There are already masterpieces in frames around the house, refrigerator doors cluttered with drawings and piles upon piles of art projects waiting for permanent storage.

And I have a lifetime supply of my children’s art to recycle into wrapping paper when needed. But my creativity cannot keep up with theirs and our house is overwhelmed with art.

Thus, the recycle incident.

The Nevada County Superintendent of Schools Office is helping to foster the creativity of children through the local Young at Art program.

This year, NCSOS provided a stipend to school districts for each classroom that participated in the program, which gets exhibited at the Eric Rood Administrative Center.

The funds need to be used for the purchase of art supplies in the classroom, said program coordinator Judy Nielsen.

Young at Art is a national program coordinated in conjunction with Youth Art Month.

“This exhibition is a public testimony to the value of the arts in education. One of the best ways to promote arts education is to take every opportunity to let people know of its benefits,” Nielsen wrote.

Artwork from a wide variety of grades and schools across western Nevada County is currently available for viewing at the Nevada County building.

It will be up through May 23 in the second floor hallways.

It’s worth a stop to check out the impressive artistic skills of local youth.
