Finding, reigniting love in Nevada County

Nevada County residents are finding a new path for attracting and reigniting love at LoveWorks For You, run by Sonika Tinker and Christian Pedersen.

The growing relationship training service moved to Grass Valley from Sacramento early last year.

“People say that we have created a practical application of ‘The Law of Attraction’ and ‘The Secret,’” said Tinker, 56, a native of the Bay Area who lives with Pedersen in Meadow Vista near Auburn.

“The transformative part is the interaction with others in a workshop setting and through the interactions and practice, feeling the changes in your body.”

Pedersen, 41, a native of Denmark, said the face-to-face experience is the key tool that makes the LoveWorks system more efficient than the thousands of relationship books, videos, singles or couples counseling or webinars out there to help people find or reignite true love.

“It’s not that the other material is wrong or bad,” he said. “But even with the best relationship information book, it’s hard to make a change if it’s just you alone with a book.”

LoveWorks offers at least two free one-night seminars a month, a dozen weekend workshops a year and week-long retreats and private sessions.

Currently, Tinker and Pedersen’s next local event is 7 p.m. today at the Sierra Center for Spiritual Living. They also have a free session scheduled for April 10.

More information is available in The Union’s calendar section or at the LoveWorks website, http://loveworksforyou.com.

Topics for the events vary, but the core purpose is the same: Let go of the negative vibration of lack, criticism and “wanting,” and instead create the energy of fulfillment, satisfaction and “having” in the moment. This is done at the workshops through interaction with others until it becomes embedded.

Kate Weathers and Machen MacDonald are two of many Nevada County residents who say they have benefited from the work.

Weathers, 44, a personal chef from Lake of the Pines, said the repeated practice and support were the game- changers for her.

“A lot of times you go to a workshop and say, ‘this is mind-blowing,’ and then, in a few days, you forget it,” she said. “This has total immersion, and that’s what I needed.”

When she came to LoveWorks about a year ago, Weathers said she had been divorced five years and was losing hope of finding a new mate.

“I wanted to be in a relationship but I didn’t want to do it like I did it before,” Weathers said. “But I didn’t know how to do it any differently.”

After taking a series of one-night and weekend workshops and continuing to practice the tools, Weathers put her newly created “self” up in a profile on Match.com about six months ago.

Her happy, fulfilled, joyful profile was worlds away from the one she posted when she had tried Match.com in the past and which had produced disappointing results, she said.

“Within four days, I met the man whom I’ve been in relationship with for the last six months,” Weathers said.

“I had become the kind of person I wanted to be in a relationship with, and then I was able to attract that kind of person.”

MacDonald, 50, a business coach, bestselling author, speaker and columnist for The Union, had been together with his wife, Laura MacDonald, for more than 20 years.

By early last year, however, the marriage had stumbled a bit.

“We thought we had the tools and resources to get past our sticking points,” said MacDonald, of Grass Valley. “And yet we still struggled.”

“The program has not just enhanced my marriage,” MacDonald said, “it has carried over into my relationship with my children where I can really communicate wholeheartedly with my 19-, 14- and 9-year-old kids.

“It even flows outside the home into my professional career,” he said

In a recent one-night free workshop in Grass Valley titled “Love and the Law of Attraction,” Tinker and Pedersen laid out their blueprint for transitioning from “wanting” to “having.”

The general idea, which can be modified according to various topics and situations, is this:

Step 1: Quit creating more of what you don’t want.

Step 2: Create from possibilities going forward; don’t be weighed down by the past.

Step 3: Know what you really want.

Step 4: Identify the pattern that disrupts your vibration and vision.

Step 5: Let yourself reside in the “having,” that life is working out, that you live in a space of love.

Tinker and Pedersen, who say they practice the techniques they teach in their own relationship, met in 2004 at a two-week workshop at the Option Institute in the Berkshire Mountains.

The workshop was titled “Inner Strength.”

After a two-year-long, cross-continent courtship, Pedersen finally moved from Denmark to the United States to be with Tinker. They married on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2007.

They began re-creating LoveWorks with friends and in small gatherings from an earlier model started by Tinker in the 1990s.

Tinker, who trained extensively in counseling, relationships and leading workshops, had taken time off from LoveWorks to help raise her two children from a previous relationship.

In 2010, they launched the retooled Love Works for You.

“In the programs that I’ve attended led by Christian and Sonika, Laura and I have come away with applicable communication tools and models that are amazing in deepening our love for each other,” said Machen MacDonald.

“Our relationship is now in a place where we could have never ever imagined after 23 years of marriage.”

Weathers, whose new partner has attended a LoveWorks event with her, has signed up for the year-long relationship Mastery Program with Tinker and Pedersen.

Now that she’s attracted a loving partner, she is also learning skills to deal better with the conflicts that inevitably surface in any relationship.

“I’m looking at every aspect of a relationship,” Weathers said of the mastery course.

“I’m learning how I can change my entire approach to relationships and learn how to do it differently.”
