Guitar great Richard Thompson to perform in Grass Valley May 7

The Center for the Arts announced today that two of the original members of the folk-rock band Fairport Convention — Richard Thompson and Iain Matthews — will perform this spring in Grass Valley. Thompson will perform an evening of solo acoustic music at 7:30 p.m., May 7, at the center’s main stage. His opening act will be his former bandmate from Fairport Convention, Matthews.

Named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 guitarists of All Time, Thompson is also one of the world’s most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters.

He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards for songwriting on both sides of the Atlantic — from the Americana Music Association in Nashville to Britain’s BBC Awards and the prestigious Ivor Novello, according to the Center for the Arts.

Thompson last performed in Nevada County in 2003 when he played the Celtic Festival.

Thompson’s body of work includes more than 40 albums and many Grammy nominations, as well as numerous soundtracks. His most recent CD, “Electric,’ was produced by Nashville musician Buddy Miller.

Matthews’ musical career spans 45 years, beginning with Fairport Convention in 1967. He has put out some 40 recordings as a soloist and with bands such as Matthews Southern Comfort and Plainsong, reaching the Billboard top charts on numerous occasions.

Matthews’ latest album, “The Art of Obscurity,” brings him to the West Coast for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Tickets to the Thompson/Matthews concert are $45 for members of the Center, $55 for the general public and $150 for a limited “VIP Meet and Greet” package, which includes a reserved ticket within the first five rows of the stage, a Thompson meet and greet, a personal photo with him and an autographed lyric print.

Tickets go on sale today to the general public and are available through the center’s box office, by phone at 530-274-8384 ext. 14, online at www.thecenterforthearts.org or at BriarPatch Co-op.
