2 arrested after drugs and gun reportedly found

A man who was arrested less than two weeks ago with drugs reportedly hidden in a hollowed-out block of wood in the back of his truck was arrested again Thursday evening.

Nevada County sheriff’s deputies on patrol near Rough and Ready Highway and Adam Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. saw Marc Silva drive by them, said Sheriff Keith Royal.

Since he was known to them from prior drug arrests, they turned around and tried to locate him, Royal said, even searching the neighborhood on foot.

They located his pickup at the back of a property, partially parked behind a barn. The deputies reportedly saw Silva’s passenger, a woman identified as Chellsie Allison Ortega, walking toward them. Ortega reportedly told the deputies she was allowed to store property in the barn, an assertion the homeowner disputed.

Deputies then saw a second truck at the barn, with Silva next to it. In the bed of the pickup was a zippered pouch that was dry, despite the fact that it had been raining, Royal said.

The pouch was searched and reportedly contained two syringes and less than a gram of methamphetamine.

Both Silva and Ortega initially denied it was theirs, and then Ortega said it belonged to her, Royal said.

The truck was then searched and deputies reportedly found a box of ammunition and several containers of marijuana.

At some point, Ortega told the deputies that she had claimed the drugs because Silva had intimidated her, Royal said. She also reportedly told the deputies a gun was in the barn.

“They did find a gun, with the serial number missing,” Royal said.

Both Ortega and Silva were arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance, possession while armed, possession of drug paraphernalia, concealing evidence and criminal conspiracy. Silva faces an additional charge of committing a felony while on bail. Each were being held in lieu of $12,500 bail.

Silva had been arrested Feb. 14 after a deputy saw a truck parked in the middle of the road at Granholm Lane and Gold Flat Road at about 4:10 a.m.

The deputy approached the truck and noticed a large knife handle protruding from between the driver’s seat and the center console, as well as a smaller knife handle protruding from the sun visor.

A 4x6 block of wood in the bed of the pickup, which had been cut in half and was held together with Allen bolts, reportedly had been hollowed out to provide a hiding place. Inside, deputies reportedly found 6.75 grams of heroin, 8.5 grams of methamphetamine, 34.4 grams of amphetamine salts (Adderall), a small amount of marijuana, several drug scales and hypodermic needles.
