The National Theatre’s multi-award-winning production of “War Horse,” capturing the imagination of millions of people worldwide since its premiere in 2007, will be broadcast live to cinemas for the very first time from its home at the New London Theatre in the West End Feb. 27 as part of National Theatre Live.
The production will be broadcast live at Sierra Cinemas in Grass Valley the same day, with encore showings March 5 and 8.
Based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, “War Horse” is the powerful story of a young boy called Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who has been requisitioned to fight for the British in World War I.
Caught in enemy crossfire, Joey ends up serving on both sides during the war before landing in No Man’s Land, while Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home.
A remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship, War Horse features groundbreaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing and galloping horses to life on stage.
“War Horse” is currently in its sixth year on the London stage and is now on a tour of the U.K. and Ireland.
The Broadway production of “War Horse,” which completed its run at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater earlier this year, was the winner of six Tony Awards including a Special Tony Award for Handspring Puppet Company.
National Theatre Live is an initiative by the National Theatre to broadcast live performances onto cinema screens around the world.
“War Horse” will screen at 7:15 p.m. Feb. 27 at Sierra Cinemas in Grass Valley.
The two encore screenings will be at 3:30 p.m. March 5 and 10 a.m. March 8.
