Let Depression-era work ethic provide lesson

Congratulations to Publisher Jeff Ackerman on his excellent editorial about Central Valley farmers, who can't find workers to harvest their crops.The idea of putting prisoners to work is great! You can bet that if Joe Arpaio, sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., lived here he would have the prisoners working. In fact, his prisoners in Arizona work their own vegetable gardens and have an animal shelter (saves the county money). They have a hog farm and a Christmas tree farm. Guess what? They enjoy the work! (It has to be better than staying in those hot tents.)Yes, picking fruit and vegetables …
