POLITICAL ADVERTISING GUIDELINES, The Union Newspaper
- Any advertisement that addresses a ballot issue, candidate or office holder is considered political advertising. This includes thank you messages aimed at putting a candidate or office holder in an esteemed light.
- Political ads for statewide or national offices or issues are charged the national rate, $35.00 daily and $37.00 Saturday per column inch. This applies even if the sponsoring individual or group is local. Political ads for local (city, county) offices or issues are charged the retail rate of $26.46 daily and $28.46 Saturday per column inch.
- All political advertising is CASH WITH COPY or appropriate payment guarantees must be secured (e.g. escrow account or credit card hold). However, payment prior to reviewing the ad does not ensure publication.
- See below for specific candidate and initiative, issue, advocacy guidelines.
POLITICAL CANDIDATE ADVERTISING
- The Union wants to encourage healthy civic debate by allowing advertising that expresses the opinions of candidates, issue-oriented groups, companies and people. We recognize the need for competitive statements from candidates or groups but seek to provide a fair and accurate forum by discouraging unsubstantiated facts or claims.
- All political advertising must contain the individual responsible for the advertisement along with an identifiable street address. A post office box is not acceptable. In cases of ads being placed by a committee or organization, a member must be named. Examples: Paid for by Citizens to Elect John Smith, Dave Jones, Treasurer, 123 Main Street, Grass Valley, CA
- Political advertising may not contain defamatory, slanderous or libelous content in text or illustration particularly attacks of a personal, racial or religious nature or which discriminates on grounds of race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age or marital status.
- Political advertising may not violate or conflict with local, state or federal laws.
- Political advertising that contains accusatory copy or illustrations or claims of misconduct or illegal activities must be substantiated. For example, an advertisement paid for by one candidate that refers to an opposing candidate's record or statements should be accompanied by documentation that shows example of the voting record or public record or media quotes attributed to the candidate. The advertiser is responsible for providing this support material. Advertising that quotes, paraphrases, or refers to court decisions, official actions of public officials should be accompanied by a copy of the decisions, actions or legislation referred to in text.
- Political advertising that contains endorsement names must have written approval from each person whose name appears in the advertisement along with the person(s) name, address and phone number.
- No The Union newspaper article may be accepted for inclusion in political initiative, issue or advocacy advertising without written consent of the publisher.
- The Union newspaper endorsement of a political candidate are acceptable for inclusion in advertisements only if they are from the current election period and are for the office currently sought.
- Each political advertisement will contain the phrase "(Paid Political Advertisement)", using the parenthesis set in 9-point Newton medium type. The phrase will be set only once in the center at the very top of each ad.
- If the ad is designed to look like a news story, we will follow our current policy governing editorial-style advertising by setting the same phrase "(Paid Political Advertising)" in 9-point Newton medium type, one, two or three times at the top, depending upon column width measurement as follows: Once at the top of 1, 2 or 3 column ads Twice across the top of 4 or 5 column ads Three times across the top of 6 column ads.
- The Union editorial typefaces cannot be used in advertising copy. Restricted fonts include, but are not limited to Century, Helvetica, Carta and Universe.
- No new issues can be introduced in advertising running less than 72 hours prior to election day.
- The Union newspaper reserves the right to cancel an advertisement, even if it was originally accepted and acknowledged.
- All specific position requests will be charged 20% of the ad cost.
- All ad copy for ads in this category will require the approval of the Publisher prior to publication.
