ay on Jan. 26, 2012, at Hospice of the Foothills Compassionate Care Home after a courageous battle with aggressive stomach cancer. He was 59.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Twin Cities Church in Grass Valley. A wake will follow; location to be announced at the church.
Russ was born June 2, 1952, in Sioux City, Iowa. He was the oldest of his seven brothers and sisters. He lived a lot of different places during his life.
He traveled from one end of the country to the other many times. He finally settled in Northern California, living in Auburn for several years
and spent his final years in Grass Valley.
He was the owner of Last Books, an online bookstore through Amazon.com. He devoted his last few years to building his business from the ground up; his passion for his work was evident in the fact that he continued working until about a week before his demise.
He had also volunteered for the Hospice Thrift and Gift store in Nevada City. He dealt blackjack twice a month for the residents of Sierra View Manor.
He had a special place in his heart for children, and for many years, he taught the children's ministry at Twin Cities Church. He also went on a mission trip to Uganda, Africa, in 2009 and changed the lives of everyone he came into contact with there.
Russ loved camping, fishing, playing guitar and spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. It gave him tremendous joy to have his children move to the area a few years ago.
Russ touched many lives over the decades and he loved helping people. He was so generous with his time, money and kindness; he will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him. He overcame such adversities in his life and came out with his sense of humor and love intact.
He is survived by his wife, Jan Waterman; his son, Toby Waterman; his daughter, Allison Waterman; grandsons, Alexander and Dreux Chase; his mother, Della Waterman; sisters, Brenda and Suzy Waterman; brothers, Mike, Ike and Glenn Waterman; many more grandchildren, cousins, nephews, nieces, etc.
He is preceded in death by his dad, Glenn Waterman; and his brother, Mark Waterman.
In lieu of flowers or memorial contributions, please consider a donation to Hospice of the Foothills, 11270 Rough and Ready Hwy., Grass Valley.
