Former Grass Valley mayor Ed Tellam has died, according to Hooper and Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City.
Edward John Tellam was 84. He died Saturday, Feb. 4, with his family by his side. Following the local tradition for fire officials, the bell at the old fire station on Race Street tolled 84 times at 5 p.m. that day.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Hooper and Weaver Mortuary. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 10, at the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building, 255 S. Auburn St., downtown. The Rev. Andy Owens will officiate.
The All Veteran's Honor Guard of Nevada County will present full military honors following the funeral at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Mr. Tellam was born Nov. 15, 1927, in Michigan and moved to Grass Valley in 1928. His father worked in the mines.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1948. In 1948, he married the love of his life, Lillian Lucille Fendley.
Mr. Tellam worked as a teamster for local concrete and gravel companies for more than 25 years.
He joined the Grass Valley Volunteer Fire Department in 1954 and was fire chief in 1963 and 1968. After retiring, he became an honorary member of the department, which he served actively for more than 25 years.
He was elected to the City Council in 1969, serving as vice mayor from 1971 to 1972 and mayor from 1973 to 1977.
He had been living at Golden Empire Convalescent Hospital on Dorsey Drive in Grass Valley.
