In May, Nevada County's Hub Society will take six guests to the world-famous Indianapolis Speedway. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to see history being made.
The program is open to all between the ages of 18 and 30. The trip will begin with a number of visits to private collections and museums and end with the race on May 27. Included will be pit passes to see the mechanics work up-close.
Selection of participants will be based on the following criteria: an automotive interest, a resume, which could include books read, and a two-page essay. The essay topic will be on the history of the Indianapolis Speedway and people related to its history. Topic suggestions include Harry A. Miller, Leo Goosen, Barney Oldfield, Dario Resta, the Granatellis and other key players in the history of America's Speedway.
One slot will be reserved for a student from McPhearson College, a four-year automotive restoration program.
Fundraising for the program will come from three sources: Donations of automotive parts that can be sold at swap meets by the students to raise funds; Direct sponsorship of a traveling student; Cash donations.
Deadline for submission is March 1. Essays will be reviewed by the selection board and student selection will be completed by March 30.
The Hub Society is a materials science-focused group created to inspire youth to learn about science through the automobile.
It is based in a testing laboratory in Grass Valley, which has processed over 1.3 million materials samples in the last two decades. The society uses vintage automobiles for case studies.
Society members have been studying the people and the science behind motor sports and as part of the learning, have begun building a database of metals and alloys from this early period to discover new uses for these metals. They have found a formula for antibacterial zinc-free German silver; one application for this could include touch-surface overlays in hospitals to reduce the spread of disease.
Please send submissions to Macs Lab at 431 Crown Point Circle, Suite 120, Grass Valley, CA 95945.
