Widowed Persons Association, Chapt. 14
After our Christmas meeting at Alta Sierra Country Club and our Christmas party, we settled in to our daily routine of being there for each other in other activities. Our last meeting in January hosted Michael Beaman who spoke on State Long Term Benefits for those either needing long term care or those looking to move to a retirement facility. His talk was very informative with many of us learned what we should do to protect our finances and still have the level of living wished for our later years. In comic relief, our group had a riotous White Elephant sale with many donated items which were later sold for $1. We go on the theory that "someone's junk becomes another person's treasure." Many of our members are looking forward to joining the Roadrunners for a 15-day cruise to Hawaii in March. Our next meeting will be on February 10 at the Holbrooke Hotel. We welcome new members.
For information please call Nickie at (530) 272-7292 or Eileen at (530) 272-2487.
Bear Yuba Land Trust
With the start of World War II, the United States Army acquired a huge section of land we now know as Beale Air Force Base and Spenceville Wildlife Area. The Spenceville area was used for aerial and ground assault combat training. There are numerous structures that are tucked away and off the beaten track in this popular wildlife preserve — wartime remnants from approximately 65 years ago. Join the Bear Yuba Land Trust on this 4.5 mile moderate trek where we will visit 10 military bunkers, the “Cabbage Patch” cemetery, and the strange edifice known as the “Dragon's Teeth.” Clarence Motter, local amateur historian, will be leading this outing. When he originally approached Fish and Game, overseers of the Wildlife Area, they said there were only six bunkers, however, Clarence has discovered at least 10 in his explorations. Join us as he takes us back in time. The trek is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 and costs $12 for BYLT members and $17 for not-yet-members.
