More than just flicks, the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival, held over the weekend in Nevada City, also offered food for thought.
And for the body.
Volunteers with Living Lands Agrarian Network, a local organization that connects farmers with land available for farming, served a free lunch for folks attending the Nevada City festival.
The fest is billed as the largest event of its kind, showing films about nature, community activism, adventure, conservation, water, energy, climate change, wildlife, environmental justice, agriculture and indigenous cultures.
It concluded Sunday after three days of film screenings, sessions designed to inspire attendees to activism, and street theater.
Climate Trial Puppet Theater, performed by Peaceful Uprising, told the story of climate change activist Tim DeChristopher, whose trial was postponed nine times before taking place in March 2011.
Inspired by the proceedings, a group of activists, including DeChristopher, wrote a play and created larger-than-life puppets with the help of artist and activist David Solnit. Their performance Saturday was sponsored by Finding the Good Semester Program of Nevada City.
A children's Salmon Parade was hosted by the South Yuba River citizens League, the nonprofit that started the film fest as a fundraiser for its mission of protecting the river for salmon and trout.
Sponsors of the festival included founding sponsor AJA Video of Grass Valley; and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Patagonia, Clif Bar and Mother Jones.
