Bear River's wrestling team opened the Pioneer Valley League season with a 48-24 win Wednesday over 2011 league champion Lincoln.
“We did really well,” said coach Kevin Figueroa. “We're progressing, but there's lots of room for improvement.”
The Bruins will head west on Friday for a tournament at Sonoma, with an eye toward continuing their forward momentum.
“As a team, we won. That's a great thing,” said Figueroa. “And individually, we saw what we need to work on now.”
During the 195-pound weight class match, a Lincoln wrestler, whose full name was not available at press time, was taken away by helicopter after suffering an accidental elbow blow to the back of the neck.
The athlete was conscious at the time he was taken away, said Figueroa, and the helicopter was a precautionary measure.
