When you think of art towns, you may think of Taos, N.M.; Ashland, Ore.; Florence, Italy. How about Nevada County, Calif.? We live in an area that is soaked with rich history, beautiful scenery, and an unusually talented and thriving arts and culture scene. We have it all with an exceptional amount of visual, literary, and performing arts on every corner. Our county seems to be a catalyst for it. Over the coming year, look for our monthly column that will include various topics about the arts and cultural activities in our county.
Bringing it all together is the goal of your local “Nevada County Arts” (formerly Arts Collaborative of Nevada County.) Designated by the board of supervisors as the leadership and coordinating agency (arts council) on behalf of the county's arts organizations, the board of NCArts is working diligently to facilitate collaborative efforts that promote and sustain the visual, literary and performing arts of Nevada County.
NCArts facilitates a range of collaborative activities for county arts organizations and artists, unified around the common purpose of promoting and exhibiting their talents and sustaining their organizations.
In the past two years, NCArts has become a strong voice representing the arts to the Nevada County Board of Supervisors and the State of California. An all volunteer and member supported organization, NCArts has also received grants from the California Arts Council State and Local Partnership Program for operational purposes and a comprehensive website (NevadaCountyArts.org). The funding has helped create an artist registry and current events calendar, as well as collaborative sponsorships, workshops, social media, outreach, and collaborative marketing opportunities.
Nevada County Arts has a Performing Arts Committee, which brings together our local presenting organizations, currently 14 members strong:
Community Asian Theatre of the Sierras (CATS); Ewing Productions; InConcert Sierra (and Sierra Master Chorale); KVMR; LeGacy Productions
Lorraine Gervais; Miners Foundry; Music in the Mountains; Nevada County Composers Cooperative; North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center ; Paul Emery Presents; Sierra Stages The Center for the Arts; The Nevada Theater.
This active committee meets bi-monthly and works on collaborative marketing and presenting. The result has created cohesion amongst the presenters in such a positive and unique way that NCArts is also forming Visual Arts, Literary Arts and Arts Education Committees.
NCArts will continue to bring the arts together with the goal of sustaining the rich cultural fabric we have all come to enjoy. For more information, contact NCArts Board President Jon Blinder at (530) 278-5155 or visit nevadacountyarts.org
Our monthly Prospector NCArts column will keep you up to date on what's happening with the Arts in Nevada County.
