A Nevada City man involved in a wreck that closed Red Dog Road was intoxicated, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Travis Thacker, 23, was driving a 1999 Mazda Protege east on Red Dog Road from Boulder Street at about 10:12 p.m. Friday, according to the CHP and Nevada County Sheriff's Office dispatch reports.
Amanda Helmuth, 40, also of Nevada City, was driving a 2003 Honda Pilot west on Red Dog, approaching the stop sign at Boulder Street, the CHP reported.
“As Thacker negotiated a right curve in the roadway, he failed to maintain his land, traveled across the roadway and collided head-on with Helmuth's vehicle,” the CHP reported. “Both vehicles were disabled and Red Dog Road was blocked (by) the vehicles and resulting debris.”
Nevada City Fire and Police departments, Nevada County Consolidated Fire Protection District and Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Ambulance also responded, CHP reported.
Thacker complained of pain to his left hand and ringing in his ears, CHP reported.
“A subsequent investigation by the CHP determined Thacker was driving under the influence of alcohol,” CHP reported. “He was arrested at the scene and then booked into jail.”
Venberg was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence and having more than 0.0.8 percent alcohol in his blood.
He was released after posting $1,400 bail, jail records show.
