BriarPatch lands rebates for energy retrofits
Special to The Union
BriarPatch Co-op Natural Foods Community Market received a grant-funded rebate of more than $8,000 in recognition of its work to reduce energy consumption.
BriarPatch earned the recognition through Pacific Gas and Electric Co.'s EnergySmart Grocer program and through the nonprofit-administered EnergySmart Jobs program.
“Reducing our carbon footprint is important to BriarPatch's owners, and I'm proud that we were able to take advantage of this excellent opportunity to run an even more efficient, green business,” said General Manager Chris Maher.
BriarPatch shoppers may notice the store's most recent green investment in the frozen foods aisle, where cases were recently retrofitted with the Hussman EcoShine LED Lighting System and motion sensors. The move from fluorescent to LED lighting with sensors is responsible for reducing energy consumption by 89 percent, and an annual energy bill savings of about $1,000, Maher said.
What shoppers won't see are the refrigeration controls, which are projected to save the store more than $3,800 in one year.
The retrofits go beyond the steps toward energy-efficiency the grocery took as part of its 2007 certification by LEED, the program of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design created by the U.S. Green Building Council.
PG&E's program helps California grocers reduce operating costs by identifying opportunities for energy-efficient retrofits. Businesses realize instant savings on their utility bills, and program rebates allow stores to offset the cost of upgrades.
EnergySmart Jobs helps businesses adopt energy-saving technology that leads to job training, job creation and retention in a growing industry.
These two programs were able to reduce BriarPatch's expenses by $2,800, more than half of the cost of the project.
To celebrate the collaboration to buy and install the LED lights, PG&E, EnergySmart Grocer and EnergySmart Jobs presented BriarPatch with a check for $8,040 in rebates on Sept. 27. Andrew Chandler, field representative for EnergySmart Grocer, and Dave Bond, of PG&E, presented the check to Maher.
BriarPatch is at 290 Sierra College Drive, Grass Valley; visit www.BriarPatch.coop or call (530) 272-5333.
