Music in the Mountains is now accepting applications for their 2011-12 Young Composers Program.
This program offers talented music students the extraordinary opportunity to learn more about the nuts and bolts of music while studying composition with professional composers.
The program begins Saturday, Sept. 10, continues through the school year and ends with a concert of student works performed by professional musicians as part of MIM's Summerfest in June. The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 2.
This program is a perfect example of collaboration between Music in the Mountains and the Nevada County Composers Cooperative with Nevada County youth being the direct beneficiaries.
The Young Composers Program reaches out to students in middle school through college. It consists of both Saturday classes and private one-on-one lessons throughout the school year.
The class focuses on notation, software notation, theory, harmony, counterpoint, sight singing, melodic and rhythmic dictation, instrument studies, music history, conducting, listening, public speaking, resume building and composition.
Students write two works during the year, a vocal work premiered mid-year and work of choice premiered at Summerfest.
