Johnny “John” Rua passed away on August 7, 2011 five months after being diagnosed with Melanoma Cancer. He was 74.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, August 23, at 11:30 at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, on Rough and Ready Hwy. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Nevada City Elks Lodge. John was born July 23, 1937 at Jones Hospital to George and Frances Rua. He lived in Grass Valley his entire life and attended Bell Hill, Hennessey and graduated in 1955 from Nevada Union High School where he was Captain of the football team and Class President.
He began his grocery career at 16, working for Lucky Cardinal. He owned the 49er Market for five years and then spent 43 years in the grocery business, including managing the Lucky Store in Grass Valley from the time it opened in 1977, until he retired in 1996. John was an original member of the Double Diamond Hunting Club, a member of the Nevada County Sportsman Club, the Auburn Trap Club, and a lifetime member of the Grass Valley Elks.
In his spare time he loved to hunt, fish, shoot trap, cut wood and garden. He also, loved his home, family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Frances (Keehley) Rua, his first wife Savannah “Cookie” Rua, daughter Kristee Ann Rua, sons Donald Brian and John “Dino” Rua, and brothers Carl and George Rua.
He was a wonderful husband, loving father, and adored grandfather and uncle.
John is survived by, his wife Marlene Lee Rua, grandsons Mathew and Brian Rua, granddaughter Shelby Ann Rua, step-children Kim Smith, Michael and Charles Beard, seven step-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was hard-working and tough, kind and generous and a loyal friend who was loved by all. His outgoing personality, sense of humor and ability to make people laugh, will be missed deeply by his family and longtime friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to your favorite charity in John's name.
