2010 Super D national champion Chris Thibodeau of Grass Valley missed a repeat performance by just one second at the 2011 National Championships, July 16 and 17, in Sun Valley, Idaho.
Right after the start of the six-mile course, he lost his chain and was forced to dismount and reattach it to continue. This happened not once, but twice.
Despite the setback, he finished the race in 21 minutes, 50 seconds, right behind Greg Kreiger of Cedar Burg, Wis., who finished at 21:49 in the open 19-29 age group.
He was not the only local expert rider to finish second by a second. Stosh Bangston of Nevada City finished in second place, one second back as well, in the 40-45-year-old age group with a time of 21:32.
The Pro Class also was determined by a one-second margin when Adam Craig of Bend, Ore., beat out Carl Decker, also of Bend, with a time of 19:37.
Nate Byron of Penn Valley finished in the Pro Class with a time of 20:51 with Mason Bond of Cedar Ridge winning the Junior class with a time of 20:38.
In other action, Thibodeau placed 15th in the Cat 1 Senior 25-29 cross country race with a time of 1:34. Hollie McGovern of Nevada city was third on the podium in the Masters 25-39 women in 1:46, Bangston was fourth on the podium in the Master 40-44 in 1:22, Chris McGovern sat on the podium in 4th in the Single Speed class in 1:25, and Byron finished 29th in 1:56 in the Pro Class.
