This has been a most inspirational week. Three years ago, the Youth Bicyclists of Nevada County Foundation was established to financially support school bike clubs and provide biking- related activities county-wide for youths.
Like most adults who have a bucket list, this was just something I felt to be very beneficial to the youths in Nevada County, but I could never have imagined the focus and drive these young athletes are finding within themselves.
Sun Valley, Idaho, was the venue for 2011 USA Cycling Cross Country National Championship Races, sponsored by the City of Sun Valley, The Sun Valley Ski Resort, the US Forest Service, local businesses and bike industries.
The new course trail included elevation gains of 375 feet per prologue lap and 1,250 feet per mountain lap. The weather was perfect with blue skies, 70-plus degrees and a slight breeze.
The venue was perfect for the Nevada Union High School Mountain Bike Racing Team, which was highly recognized this year at the National Championship Races. Ten of 34 Nevada Union Mountain Bike Team athletes qualified with four teen athletes winning top-five podium spots.
Mason Bond placed first in Cat1 Super D with a time of 20 minutes, 38 seconds and was 17th in Cat1 Cross Country with a time of 1 hour, 25 minutes.
Christa Baker was fourth in Cross Country, Cat2, at 1 hour, 15 minutes, while Sarah Lowe was fifth in Cross Country, Cat3. Ensei Kaneko was fourth in Cat3, Cross Country, with a time of 53 minutes, and Caden Maves was sixth in Cat3, Cross Country (53 minutes, 23 seconds).
Brad Hoffler placed 13th (1 hour, 1 minute, 4 seconds) in Cross Country, Cat3, while the Pardini sisters, Chelsea and Madison, placed 12th and 9th, respectively, in the Cat 3, Cross Country, division.
Also racing in Cat 3, Cross Country, was Meredith Nunnik, who placed seventh. Completing the Miners contingent was Jeremiah Newman who was 29th in the Cross Country, Cat1, and who also raced in the Super D, Cat1.
Youth Bicyclists of Nevada County and all school bike clubs appreciate everyone's contribution and donations.
Thank you to our local sponsors, and trail community, including the Bureau of Land Management, the Tahoe National Forest, the Empire Mine State Park, the Nevada County Irrigation District, and the Nevada County Land Trust, which aids in establishing trails in our community for the NUHS Mountain Bike Club and the YBONC Foundation.
A huge thanks to the dedicated coaching staff of Eric Newman, Don Hoffler, Sam Raymond, NU advisor Robert Emmett and the many volunteer parent cyclists.
The success of the NUHS Mountain Bike Racing athletes is due to the dedicated coaching staff and motivated teen athletes, enthusiastic sponsors and the tremendous trails in our community. This was truly wonderful accomplishment for everyone involved!
