A parade will mark Independence Day in western Nevada County, and some fireworks will be seen, despite a general ban on their sales.
A community parade will start at 11 a.m. Monday, July 4, in downtown Grass Valley. Members of the Nevada City Lions Club will pass out small American flags for attendees to wave, and parade participants often have candy for children.
Bring your lawn chairs and set them up early for best viewing.
On fireworks:
• The city of Grass Valley does not allow the sale or use of fireworks within city limits.
• Nevada City does allow use of fireworks, but not sale.
Miner Moe's Pizza, on Argall Way between Zion Street and Searls Avenue, will have a “block party” starting at dusk in the parking lot. People can bring their own safe-and-sane fireworks and light them off.
People also can order pizza and take it to the lot, owner Monique Bartosh said.
• Nevada County does not allow the sale of fireworks, or the use, with some exceptions for professional displays, in the unincorporated areas.
• The Nevada County Fairgrounds will have its annual professional fireworks display, presented by the July 4th Committee. Gates will open at 3 p.m. for crafts, food and fun for the family. Fireworks will be set off at dusk.
Cost is $8 for adults, free for children 12 and younger, and free for active military with identification. Parking costs $5.
For Information, contact the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce at www.NevadaCityChamber.com or (530) 265-2692.
• Lake Wildwood, a gated community in Penn Valley, will shoot fireworks from Commodore Park starting at 9:45 p.m.
Activities are planned throughout the day, including a children's bicycle race at the community center at 9 a.m., the boat parade at 10 a.m. and parade prizes at 1:30 p.m.
Other activities include a sack race, suitcase race, bingo, a cakewalk and a crazy hat contest. Games at the pool will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.; food will be for sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
