Independence Day weekend offers visitors an opportunity to explore the Tahoe National Forest — but forest officials are asking folks to be especially safety minded this holiday. “Rivers are running very high, swift, and cold,” said Forest Supervisor Tom Quinn.
Recreationists are reminded that, even though the rivers may appear inviting, they can be especially treacherous this year due to higher and colder water due to later snow melt.
Despite snow remaining in the high country, fireworks are not allowed anywhere in the national forest.
North-facing slopes above 6,500 feet have snowdrifts. Melting snow can be especially slippery and hikers are cautioned to be careful of steep, snow-covered trails.
Most TNF campgrounds are open for the holiday weekend. Most campgrounds also have sites available on a first-come-first-served basis.
Those camping outside designated campgrounds are reminded that a free campfire permit is required and can be picked up at any Ranger Station.
Even though the high country still has extensive snow, the lower elevations are drying out and fire danger is increasing. Please be sure to fully extinguish your campfire before you leave your campsite.
