Down 13-5 in the bottom of the final inning, Penn Valley Mini Storage was trying to mount a comeback against Taco Shell in their Gold Country Senior Softball game on Monday in Penn Valley.
They started the inning with runners on first and second with none out. Then, Gil Dominguez hit a sharp ground ball to third baseman Bob Hannnah.
Hannah stepped on the bag and fired over to Rob Oates at second base, who shot the ball over to first baseman George Caulkins in time for the third out and in time to complete a 5-4-3 triple play, one of the rarer feats in the game.
Taco Shell had two-out RBIs from Oates and Jim Knerr in the first inning of the game to jump out to an early lead and added to that with a four-run second inning. Dan Estin had a three-run knock to center field as part of the rally.
Mini Storage scored its first run in the bottom of the third off a sacrifice fly from Jon Cosbie. Cosbie also brought in two runs with a triple in the fourth.
He would come in to score in the inning to make it 9-5, but that was as close as it would get. Taco Shell scored four times in the last three innings to put the game out of reach.
Knerr and Estin each brought in runs with singles in the seventh inning.
Taco Shell improved its record to .500 on the season and are 6-6. The Mini Storage team fell to 3-9.
Penn Valley Mini Storage will play again at 5:30 p.m. today in Penn Valley.
Taco Shell will play at 6:45 p.m. today in Grass Valley.
