Nevada County Library announced Friday it received $8,750 in state funding to continue a literacy program through June.
California Library Literacy Service granted the money out of the remainder of its 2010-11 fiscal year funding after the Butte County Private Industry Council, which operated the literacy program in Nevada County, fell into financial ruin earlier this year.
The literacy program, known as Read Up, provides funding for tutoring about 100 Nevada County residents each year who are native English speakers to improve their reading or writing skills, said Nevada County Librarian Mary Ann Trygg.
The program is funded through the library and managed by the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools Office. It costs about $50,000 annually to operate, and the state kicks in about $27,000, with the county library funding the difference, Trygg said. Whether the state will continue to fund the program
