In 2002, Bear River High School and the Nevada County Library joined forces to open a new library. The station, housed right inside the campus, provides services to high school students and, during limited hours, the general public. The creation of this branch was made possible through Nevada County Measure B sales tax revenue.
The Bear River Station has been an excellent collaboration between the school district and the county. The combined county and school collections meet the needs of both groups.
Almost two years ago, when a poor economy led to consideration of the closure of this facility, the community rallied in support of keeping this branch open.
High school librarian Amy Linden is one who saw the possible elimination of the public library as a major loss to students. Cross-generational activities and usage of this library results in self-enrichment and education for old and young alike and sharing resources is a win-win for all. Library staff is proud to support education to Nevada County residents in this way.
Although compact in size, this branch offers an extensive collection of books, audio books and DVDs. The space also contains coin-operated copy machines and 22 computer terminals, which makes this the best library location in all of Nevada County to use free Internet connection. There are tables and lots of room for reading and studying.
At 4 p.m. Mondays, “Preschool Story Time” takes place for children aged 3 to 5. The library also hosts a book club.
Along one wall, local nonprofit, Friends of the Nevada County Libraries sells donated books for the benefit of county libraries. Donations of books, audiobooks, and DVDs are accepted by the Friends at this and all branches.
For community members living in south county, the Bear River Station is becoming more important as we see gasoline prices rise. Library users often place requests on library materials from other library branches. Nevada Joint Union High School District representatives transport books and other library materials to Bear River on a daily basis for pick up.
It's a nifty way to augment the relatively small collection at Bear River for both county library users and Bear River students.
