Nevada Union's Robin Callas became the first Miner wrestler to place at the national tournament this past weekend, earning All-American status with a seventh place finish.
Callas, competing at 152 pounds, earned the medal from a field of 64 other wrestlers at the National High School Coaches Association's national tournament in Virginia Beach, Va.
It has been a roller coaster ride for Callas this year. His troubles started with a knee injury that sidelined him for a month and a half and then he and fellow teammate Julian Purdy were disqualified from the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters tournament on the second day of competition after missing a wake-up call and arriving late to the weigh-in.
The masters tournament disqualification made him ineligible for the state tournament but his coach successfully got him into the national tournament as a wild card contender. Clearly, he took advantage of his opportunity.
Wil Sumner and Kai Woo competed in the freshman nationals and Purdy and Dalton Stevenson competed in the junior nationals. None of those competitors placed.
