A large oak tree laden with snow barely missed two small children asleep in their beds when it came crashing down on the Davis family home during the recent storm.
“It went right down the center, through the kitchen and across the bathroom, with a child's bedroom on either side,” said grandmother Kimberly Franchi, of Lake Wildwood.
At the corner of Walker and Butler streets in Grass Valley, crews worked Monday to remove the giant, while the Davis family moved from the Franchi home where they had been staying to the Northern Queen Motel, in Nevada City.
The tree came down with such force that door frames were thrown off square, Franchi said. Homeowners Shaun and Amie Davis — Franchi is Amie's mother — will have to tear down the home and rebuild, Franchi said.
Homeowner's insurance will pay for the family's motel and some basic necessities in the meantime, she added.
Shaun Davis, a Grass Valley native, has a painting business in the area. The Franchi family has been in Nevada County for 22 years, Franchi said.
