Editor's note: Rebecca Mosbarger owns WebPrincess Hosting and Design.
What is your job?
I'm the owner of WebPrincess Hosting and Design, a full-service — yet inexpensive — hosting and website design company.
I offer a green alternative to advertising. That's because advertising on the web is inexpensive compared to telephone books — sometimes as little as 15 percent of the cost.
I can design a website for as little as $700 for three pages. Once it's up, it's up — it's yours.
What is your typical day like?
I meet with my client to get a sense of what type of site he or she wants. One client, a sushi restaurant, had silk batik artwork on the walls, so I worked off that to create a design evoking the feel of the business.
I then work with the client to develop e-commerce possibilities, choosing the right keywords that will result in first-page placement when people search on the Internet. If the search engines can't find you, your website isn't helping your business.
Domain names — or, the address for your website — need to be relevant, logical and available. I help my client navigate all that.
If appropriate to the business, I can build shopping carts for online stores, expanding my client's access to customers.
I also build analytics into the page. This tool helps clients direct their marketing more effectively to the people who are most likely to be interested in their goods and services.
I do all this in a few days.
What would surprise most people about your job if they only knew?
How much fun it is to design web pages. I especially enjoy the graphics part of design.
What do you love about your work?
I can be anywhere and work.
I also love figuring how to visually represent my client's goods and services, creating a custom design that represents their style and also effectively promotes their business.
What do you find most challenging?
Getting people to simplify what they want to present can sometimes be really challenging.
Sometimes I have to work my way through the client profiling process to pick up the key elements and provide thematic continuity to the site.
What preparation is required to do this?
I taught myself to read the programming code that creates web pages, then found a program that handles a lot of the code for me, so now I can focus on graphic design.
My background in lending and banking helps me on the business side.
What is your background?
I was born in the San Francisco Bay Area, and my family traveled throughout the United States and Mexico before moving to Grass Valley in the 1970s.
After I graduated from Nevada Union High School, I was a stay-at-home mom for many years while helping my husband, Randy Mosbarger, build our plumbing business.
We now live in Alta Sierra.
What's new?
We're expecting our first grandchild in March!
