Six Nevada Union wrestlers and three Bear River wrestlers qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters tournament after snaring top spots in this past weekend's division championships.
The Miners were led by Robin Callas (154), who took first, only four weeks after knee surgery, at the meet in Sacramento. Others advancing are: Sawyer Mosel (105), Wil Sumner (114), Tyler Szura (121) and Julian Purdy (132) all capturing third place in Division II. Jonny Callas will advance with a fourth place finish.
The Bruins battled through transportation troubles because of Saturday's snow but managed to get everyone in place in time at Natomas High School in Sacramento. They were led by Jory Gemignani (112) who took first in the Division III, controlling his championship match from start to finish. Senior teammate Juan Gudino (119) also captured first with a dominating performance. Nick Sauers (130) also qualified for the masters tourney with a fourth place performance
NU senior Phil Thompson had a strong finish this past weekend, taking eighth but he needed to finish in the top six to advance.
NU took sixth as a team.
The six remaining NU grapplers and the three from Bear River will compete Friday and Saturday at Stockton Arena with the top seven medalists advancing to the state competition.
