Nevada City resident Jim Doyle has one burning question:
“What would Christmas be without Santa Claus?”
Understanding the jolly elf is busy this time of year, Doyle and his wife, Remy Doyle, helped out during the recent Nevada County Food and Toy Run. They played Mr. and Mrs. Claus at the county fairgrounds just west of Grass Valley, where hundreds of race car sets, stuffed bears and other necessities were distributed to delighted children.
But first, Santa listened to their
wishes.
“One boy, he looked me straight in the eye, and he said real serious, ‘Can I touch your beard?'” Doyle recalled with a laugh.

It's the joy of moments like that one that prompted Doyle to deck out his 2003 100th Anniversary Harley Davidson Ultra Classic with a sleigh, built by a friend, then modified and professionally hand-painted to be of service to St. Nick.
“I've been doing Santa Claus for a long time,” Doyle said. He also has been involved in regional motorcycles for nearly two decades.
But this year was the first time he combined these two passions, Doyle added.
At the fairgrounds, Santa and his elves took more than 800 photos and gave them out as gifts to every family and child, Doyle said.
When he's not helping the big guy during the Christmas rush, Doyle runs Aviation and Electronics Schools of America in Colfax.
