Jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first half of Tuesday's Division VI matchup with visiting Forest Lake Christian, Southern League champion Gustine grabbed control early and never let go of an opening-round 4-1 win over the Falcons.
“They scored three goals in the first eight minutes,” FLC coach Thad Kopec said. “I don't know whether I didn't get the guys mentally ready or what. But I guess you always have second thoughts.”
Once the Falcons had gotten past the early glut of goals, Forest Lake Christian held its own with an 18-0-1 Gustine team.
Michael Sparling scored FLC's lone goal of the match just before halftime, while goalkeeper Josh Hengel also had a strong game, Kopec said.
Vacaville Christian scored its final goal 20 minutes into the second half.
“It was a good year,” Kopec said. “Our seniors did a great job for us.”FLC finished the season with a 10-11-2 overall record, while finishing second in the Central Valley California League.
