Homeless people in western Nevada County can start receiving safe, overnight lodging starting tonight.
Hospitality House, the area's only overnight shelter, will begin offering accommodations at local faith congregations, Executive Director Cindy Maple said Tuesday.
It's six weeks earlier than usual, thanks to a federal grant extending the season to nine months per year, Maples said.
The welcome center is at 236 S. Church St., in downtown Grass Valley next to the United Methodist Church. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m.; check-in is 1 to 4 p.m. daily.
Guests can take showers, wash clothes, get hot or cold drinks and snacks, receive mail, watch TV and receive social services. They also can leave their belongings for the night in a locked room.
More than 25 congregations support the program with meals and a clean, safe place to sleep. Transportation is provided from the welcome center to the host church each evening.
