Outside of annual league tournaments, there aren't a lot of opportunities for high school girls golf teams to compete in 18-hole contests over the course of the season in the Sac-Joaquin Section.
According to Nevada Union coach Hank Davidson, the list of 18-hole tournaments extends to just three throughout the section, including the 14-team Nevada Union Invitational played Tuesday at Alta Sierra Country Club.
“We're trying to get something going to increase the awareness of girls golf in the area,” said Davidson. “And we're trying to raise some money for our program.”
By moving the tournament from October, when it was played last year, to Tuesday's tee time, Davidson helped the tourney draw stronger teams to see how his Miners would stack up against top-notch talent.
Spanish Springs, a Sparks, Nev. team that has won two of the past three Nevada state championships, took first place at Alta Sierra Tuesday, totaling a team score of 436.
Nevada Union was next with a 469 for second place. Oak Ridge finished third at 477 and Napa was fourth in 478.
“I'm pleased,” Davidson said. “How could I not be? We took second in our own tournament to a very good team in Spanish Springs, a state champion last year. We had some good teams out here (Tuesday) and hopefully, we're headed in the right direction.”
Along with NU's second-place finish in team competition, Miner junior Chelsey Love was the runner-up in individual scoring. Granite Bay sophomore Paige Lee shot a 77 to earn medalist honors, while Love was second with an 80.
“There were some fine golfers here, including Paige, who is ranked 18th nationally,” Davidson said. “Maddie Gedeon of Oakmont is here and Nicolette Bondura from Oak Ridge, I think she's also ranked nationally, is here, too. So there was some talent out there (Tuesday).
“It's good. You know, let's see where we're sitting right now.”
Along with Love's second-place performance, Megan Arnett and Emilie Arnoldi each shot a 94. Sydney Zink finished with a 97 and Madeline Wagnecht rounded out NU's five with a 104.
The Miners are back in action Thursday, hosting Bear River in nonleague action at 3 p.m.
