Editor's note: Nevada County native Zeno Acton and his wife, Erin Acton, operate Acton Arboriculture in Grass Valley.
What goods and services do you offer?
Acton Arboriculture provides tree care, landscaping, vegetation management, and arborist consulting services for both Nevada and Placer counties.
Services include: Spurless climbing, pruning, removals, tree structure and health assessments, forest restoration, and landscape installation. We install non-invasive cabling systems for large, daunting trees, prune ornamental and fruit trees, provide vista pruning, install native-themed gardens, conduct mistletoe abatement, and consult on court and insurance claims.
We use our AirSpade, a tool that allows us to trench for irrigation and utility installation without damaging roots.
What makes you different from other arborists?
Acton Arboriculture fully licensed and insured. We conduct our business with honesty and integrity, which results in repeat clients who trust and respect our work.
As licensed tree service and landscape contractors, we pride ourselves in knowing and upholding the American National Standards Institute safety standards to ensure that our crew members and the homeowners remain safe.
Acton Arboriculture doesn't climb with spikes because, over time, the use of spikes will harm the tree and could ultimately lead to its demise. Instead, we use a technique called spurless climbing, which uses only ropes and ascending devices to help us maintain the integrity, health and longevity of the tree.
Owner Zeno Acton is a member of the California Native Plant Society. He volunteered his time this spring as an instructor for the nonprofit Wildflowers Forever, which educates foothill residents about water-wise and sustainable landscaping.
What's new?
Zeno Acton recently became the only International Society of Arboriculture board-certified master arborist in Nevada County and one of two in Placer County. Nationally, 2 percent of ISA-certified arborists have obtained their ISA master arborist certification.
What do you love about your work?
I find it rewarding to provide quality service to my customers. I also enjoy educating homeowners in the selection and proper care of trees, plants and shrubs.
What do you find most challenging?
Although tree care is a physically demanding career and the elements of nature are sometimes a challenge, I find my profession to be a healthy balance of athleticism, creativity and scientific knowledge.
What is your background?
Zeno Acton was born and raised on an organic farm in Nevada County and, from a young age, was inquisitive about trees and plants.
Before attaining his master arborist certification, he earned a bachelor of science degree in environmental horticulture and urban forestry from the University of California, Davis.
His wife, Erin, also grew up in Nevada County and has a degree in finance and marketing.
Together, the Actons are committed to providing high-quality, environmentally friendly, competitively priced services to the residents of Nevada and Placer counties.
