The good news about the recent rainy weather is it helps to settle the straw on my garden paths and the sheet mulching that I use to protect topsoil from run-off and to eliminate the need to weed-whack each year. As long as it is wet, the turkeys don't make a mess of it!
Speaking of weed-whacking, it is fuel reduction time in Lake Wildwood. The deadline for making properties “fire safe” from lot line to lot line is June 21.
Grasses need to be cut and maintained at a maximum height of 4 inches. According to the official flyer, “Properties failing to meet abatement standards must pay a fee of $300. Second and subsequent violations (lots not cleared last year) must pay an increased fee of $500.”
Fun in Penn Valley
If you get your property maintenance done early, June promises a lot of fun in Penn Valley.
The Growers Market opens this week and will be open every Thursday from June through September at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Penn Valley Drive. Hours are 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
After picking up fresh produce, it just feels like summer to make a stop at Caleb's for a tasty ice cream cone.
Smokin' in the Oaks
Coming up this weekend, June 5 and 6, is the Smokin' in the Oaks State BBQ Cook-off at the Penn Valley Rodeo Grounds on Spenceville Road.
Come hungry, as this International BBQ Cookers Society-sanctioned cook-off will highlight more than 40 barbecue teams from across the state vying for cash and awards.
This is the third-largest cook-off in the state, and admission is free. You can enjoy cooking demonstrations and mounted shooting competition or just purchase taster tickets to sample your way through some of the best barbecue in the state.
Country-western concert
On June 18, Music in the Mountains will host a country-western concert at the outdoor pavilion in Western Gateway Park featuring Riders in the Sky.

Secession Day in Rough and Ready
On Sunday, June 27, residents of the town of Rough and Ready will celebrate their unique history.
This little town made a name for itself by seceding from the Union in 1850, because the residents objected to a tax on mining. Their “independence” lasted a few months, but it is remembered and recreated every year in the Secession Day play.
It starts around 10 a.m. and gives the history of the secession; they do hang the bad guys, and the audience participates in the play with lots of boos and hisses.
This will be a fun day for the whole family with art and craft booths, blacksmith shop demonstrations, a bake sale, hot dogs and children's activities.
The Fruit Jar Pickers will play their unique, old-time country and gospel music. It will also be their last day to perform at the Picker's Palace, so come on down and give them a good send off.
They will still perform at nursing homes and on special occasions, but they are in need of a new weekly venue so their Sunday sing-alongs are up in the air after this performance.
For more information about Secession Day, contact Everett Burkard at (530) 432-1501.
