On Tuesday, June 1, as part of his national tour of social consciousness, the renowned poet, writer, artist and activist, S.A. Griffin is bringing the POETRY BOMB (yes it is a bomb!) to the North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center for an evening of open-mic poetry, conversation and celebration of not only what is, but what can be.
Local poet and promoter Bill Gainer says, “This is one of the greatest audience participation art pieces to come around in a long time. The idea is to simply express your feelings, to bring us all together in community and to share who we are. It's free, bring a poem of social, political or cultural comment – read it and have it included in the BOMB. Remember the POETRY BOMB is not only a message of concern, but one of hope and celebration; it is a BOMB – of possibility! Everybody's invited.”
The Poetry Bomb is a former U.S. military practice bomb purchased as salvage and converted to a beautiful object of possibility to be filled with poetry from around the world. It has been renamed Elsie in honor of Griffin's grandmother, painted a marvelous blue in the spirit of an American hotrod – complete with pin-strips. It has a window that opens, making it possible to not only see inside, but to take poems out for sharing and to allow more submissions to be added.
Internationally recognized, Griffin has published several collections of Beat-infused poetry, co-edited The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry (1999), toured widely with the poetry troupe The Carma Bums, and acted in TV shows (“Dexter”) and films (World Trade Center).
He will discuss the BOMB, invite the audience on stage to read, share from his own work and read a random sampling of pieces already contributed to the BOMB.
Because of space and time limitations, only one poem per reader can be included in the BOMB.
