Richard A. Malott died April 30 at UC Davis Medical Center after a brief fight with leukemia. He was 77.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, at the Grass Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church, 12289 Osborne Hill Road.
Richard was born on April 10, 1933, in Los Angeles to Walter and Maria Malott. After growing up in Redwood Creek, he attended Pacific Union College and law school at UC Berkeley. While at Berkeley, he met his wife, Sharon Crane, and they were married in 1957. Following a 2-year stint in the Army JAG Corps at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, they returned to California, and Richard started a law firm in Lafayette. In 1970, Richard moved his family to Nevada City while he commuted to the Bay Area. He retired from his law firm in 1986 and focused on real estate development.
Richard enjoyed flying and was an accomplished pilot. He was one of the founders of Citizens Bank of Northern California. Richard was involved with many facets of the Seventh-day Adventist Church both locally and worldwide and had a passion for Christian education. Always identifying himself as a cowboy, Richard enjoyed the outdoors and various aspects of ranching.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sharon; daughter Richelle Weeks of Portland, Ore.; daughter Sylvia Small of Piedmont, S.D.; sons Russell and Richard Malott, Jr., both of Nevada City; and 6 grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Student Scholarship Fund through the Grass Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church.
