Courtney Ceo and Katie Mathis have seen quite a bit in their four years with the Bear River varsity softball program. The four-year letterwinners have helped the Lady Bruins win three consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section championships, along with three Pioneer Valley League titles.
Although it remains to be seen whether the senior duo can lead Bear River to four straight crowns at the league and section level, Ceo and Mathis attained another feat on Monday. By virtue of a 12-0 victory over PVL rival Colfax, the Lady Bruin seniors secured their 100th career win at Bear River.
“Congrats to Courtney and Katie,” Bear River coach Duane Zauner said. “Three sections, three PVLs and now their 100th win at Bear River. That's outstanding.”
Ceo went 4-for-4 hitting Monday with 3 RBIs, while Mathis was 2-for-3 at the plate. Alyssa Reina went 2-3 with 2 RBIs and Courtney Edwards was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs. Megan Caster added a two-run single, while Erin Nichol went 2-for-4.
Nichol got the win, allowing three hits and one walk with five strikeouts in five innings.
Bear River (16-3 overall, 6-1 PVL) hosts El Dorado at 4 p.m. today.
JV: Bear River 9, Colfax 2
The junior varsity Lady Bruins scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Colfax Lady Falcons.
Leading the Bruins at the plate was Maddie Phelps with three hits, Ali Crow had two hits and 2 RBIs and Ashliegh Higginbotham added two hits and two runs scored. Ali Thill and Jenny Astwood each added a hit.
Phelps picked up the win, allowing four hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts.
The Lady Bruins (9-6 overall, 4-3 league) play host to El Dorado today.
Nevada Union 6, Granite Bay 0
Karly Harris threw a four-hit shutout and racked up eight strikeouts with no walks Monday, as the Lady Miners topped Sierra Foothill League foe Granite Bay.
Kendal Butterfield led the way offensively going 3-for-4 and scoring a run. Sydney Elliott went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Bernadette Boren went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while Dani Szura and Mikala Strum each also picked up a hit.
Nevada Union (9-8 overall, 4-5 SFL) hosts Oakmont at 4 p.m. today.
JV: NU 6, Granite Bay 1
Reilly Gandell pitched a three-hit, complete-game, striking out seven and walking none.
Racheal Olson led NU at the plate going 1-3 with two runs scored. Taylor Mitchell, Maddie Fournier, Sierra Payne and Samantha Schultz each had a hit and scored a run, while Bailey Voss added a hit.
NU's junior varsity team also went 1-2 in the Bulldog Classic in Folsom over the weekend, dropping games to Granite Bay (6-1) and Del Oro (11-2), before breaking through with a 9-7 win over Folsom.
Gandell got the pitching victory, allowing seven runs on eighth hits with two walks and a strikeout over five innings. Kendall Clark went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Mitchell and Fournier each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

After securing a playoff berth with an 8-1 win over Lincoln on Friday, Bear River's tennis team posted its 10 win of the season Monday to clinch the best season record in the program's history.
No. 2 boys singles player Shawndar Johal won 6-1, 6-1, while Lindsey Harter remained undefeated (11-0) at No. 2 girls singles 6-0, 6-0.
The No. 2 boys doubles team of Daniel Miller and Alex Bolt won 0-6, 7-6 (7-1), 0-5, while Steve Betcher and Connor Phillips were 6-3, 6-0 winners at No. 2 boys doubles. Emilie Garber and Lauren Wells won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 girls doubles. Kirsten Malo and Shelby Carrow won 6-2, 6-3 to stay unbeaten (11-0) at No. 2 girls doubles.
David Giroux and Amy Hanson won 6-2, 6-3 at mixed doubles.
The win sets up a showdown for first place in the PVL, when Bear River (10-1) hosts defending champion Placer (11-0) at 3 p.m. today.
Falcons fall in singles tourney
Four Forest Lake Christian singles players competed in the Golden Empire League singles tournament Monday at Marysville High School.
At No. 1 singles, Caitlin Hanson earned a first-round bye and defeated a Lindhurst player 6-3, 6-4, before falling to Marysville's Mariah Edwards in the semifinals (no score reported). At No. 2 singles, Jen Menary scored a 6-1, 6-2 win over Highlands in the first round, before losing to Lindhurst 6-4, 6-0 in round two. Menary and Hanson plan to team together for doubles competition on Wednesday.
In boys action, Nathan Burnett beat Capital Christian 6-0, 6-2 in the first round at No. 1 singles, but fell to a Highlands player 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 in the second round. At No. 2 singles, Jordan Farewell lost in the first round 6-2, 6-1 to an Encina High player.
The Falcons host Lindhurst today in a match that will determine second place in the GEL.
Golf
Bear River takes third at PVL meet
The Bruins finished third at Pioneer Valley League Tournament No. 2 Monday.
Placer's Rob Schauble shot 75 on the par 72 Cherry Island Golf Course for medalist honors.
Whitney finished first with a score of 404, Placer was second with 405 and Bear River third with 412. El Dorado (432), Lincoln (453), Colfax (462) and Mesa Verde (494) rounded out the team scores.
The Bruins were led by Anthony Ertola and Brennan Southworth, who each shot 80. Andrew Jackson an Kyle Nelson each carded 82, while Jake DePass finished with 85.
Bear River has qualified for the Division IV Section Tournament at Timber Creek in Roseville next Monday.
Falcons second in CVCL tourney
Forest Lake Christian takes second in the Central Valley Christian Conference Tournament at Lincoln Hills a par 72 on Monday.
FLC's Justin Raskin earned medalist honors with a 79. Also scoring for FLC were Garrett Boatman 88, Spencer DeYoung 90, Chris McCowen 94 and John McDonald shot a 99.
The Falcons tied for second in the CVCL and will play Monday at Stevinson Ranch Golf Course in the Division V Section Tournament.
NU 201, Oakmont 215
The Miners hosted the Vikings at Alta Sierra Country Club on Monday.
Medalist honors went to NU's Adam Grizzell who shot 36, while Cody Brzezinski finished with a 38 and Cody Keogh a 39. Jace Tiller, Nathan Ferguson and Eric Babin all shot 44.
NU can clinch a playoff berth with a win over Del Oro on Wednesday at Alta Sierra Country Club.

Bear River 9, Bear Creek 3
Coleman Huntley got the win on the mound, allowing one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts in four innings. Michael Lucas allowing one hit in two innings, before being relieved by Andy Brooding (two earned runs) in the seventh.
Jordan Beskeen led the Bruins with a 3-for-4 day with two doubles and an RBI. Morgan Juric went 2-for-5 with double and 2 RBIs. Zach Welz had two hits and 2 RBIs, while Lucas was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Brooding and Brandon Fry each had a hit and drove in a run.
Bear River travels to Placer today.
The Bruin junior varsity defeated Bear Creek 16-8 Monday.

NU starting pitcher Dillon Jones went 5 innings, striking out three while giving up nine runs, five earned and walking two.
Sophomore shortstop Dusty Zeisler and Jones each had one hit in the loss.

Starting pitcher Tanner Thiesing went six and a third innings and left the game an 8-6 lead. Scott Petroskey came in and gave up six unearned Del Oro runs to take the loss
The leading hitters for the Miners were Josiah Paye who went 2-for-5 with a triple, Roland Pussich 2-for-4, Connor Fuller 4-for-5 with a double and Petroskey went 3-for-4 with a double in the loss.
NU travels to Del Oro Thursday, first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.

Forest Lake Christian 9, Woodland Christian 2
Coach Trenton Moll got all the offense he needed in the first half, as the Falcons led 7-0, to move within one victory of 400 career coaching victories at the high school and club levels.
FLC improved to 12-0 in Central Valley Christian League competition.
Kaylee Lommori scored four goals and added an assist, while Katelyn Seitz scored two goals and assisted on two others. Christa Weisman, Kacie McGeary and Lia Hegarty each had a goal and an assist, while Rachel Jordan, Dana Ormiston and Kayla Agah each had an assist.
Stephanie Herron had six saves in goal for the Falcons.
FLC (13-6-1 overall) travels to Placer today.

Bruins, Miners make strong league swims
Trey Herbert, a Nevada Union swimmer, as well as Bear River's Garrat Johnson each earned two first place finishes at their respective league championships over the weekend.
Herbert's first-place finishes came in the 50 free with a time of 21.47 seconds and the 100 free with a time of 46.64, to lead his team to a third place finish at the Sierra Foothill League Championship meet.
Nevada Union Boys took third at the Sierra Foothill League championships, behind Granite Bay and De Oro.
NU's Dillon Virva took third in the 100 butter fly with a new freshman-sophomore record time of 53.16.
“It was an incredibly fast meet for the boys,” Nevada Union coach John Sultan said. “Nine out of the 11 swimming events, it took an all-american time to win the event. That has never happened as long as I have been involved (six years).”
The Lady Miners also finished in third place in the SFL. Hayley Chase swam a time of 1 minute, 9.13 seconds in the 100 breaststroke, which put her in second place, and she finished in fifth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:20.18. The other Miner to place was Kayla Kleiber, who finished in third place twice, once in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.25 and in the 100 back with a 1:03.45.
Johnson's first-place swims for Bear River at the Pioneer Valley League championships came in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.47 and the 100 fly swimming a 51.53. His two wins led the Bruins boys team to a second place finish behind El Dorado High School on Saturday.
Josh Cutter swam to a second place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:52.78 and swam a 2:04.35 in the 200 IM which was good for third. Travis Marks finished third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.58 for the Bruins.
The Bear River girls team finished in second place behind Whitney High School and were led by Charla Wenger's first place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.85 and second p lace in the 50 free with a time of 26.10.
Zoe Schlussel earned two second place finishes, the 100 free in 58.74 and the 200 free 2:08.10 while Haley Jungers also swam to two placements, the 100 free in 59.79 which was good for third place as well as a second place finish in the 100 back in 1:07.50.
Also placing for the Bruins was Maddie Herron who took second in the 500 free with a time of 5:58.55.
"I am very proud of all the Bruin swimmers,” Bear River coach Ethan Green said. “Everyone stepped up with best times across the board."
Miners and Bruins who have qualified for the section trials will compete May 13-15 at Tokay High School in Lodi.
Track and Field
The Bear River Track and Field team competed in the Cougar Invitational on Friday night at El Dorado High School, where Shelby Jungers took third place in the pole vault, tying the school record with a vault of 8 feet, 6 inches.
Katie Tomkiewicz high jumped 4-6, earning her third place.
The Bruin boys finished third in the 1,600-meter relay.
On Saturday, Bear River sophomore Kendal Nielsen traveled to the Sacramento Meet of Champions and placed first in the long jump and second in the triple jump, breaking her personal record with a jump of 38 feet, 7 inches.
