The Grass Valley Elks Lodge No. 538 hosted a Court of Honor for Eagle Scout Matthew Schmitt on Feb. 28.
Lodge Scouting Chairman Jim Bowman presented Matthew with an American flag and a letter of congratulations from Grand Exalted Ruler James L. Nichelson.
Matthew did his Eagle Scout project at the Alta Sierra Elementary School ball field in Alta Sierra.
The chain link fence surrounding the school ball field no longer reached the ground due to holes and settling of the soil over the years. It had gaps of 6 inches to 24 inches deep. This allowed balls to roll out to the woods on one side and under cars parked in the main parking lot on another side.
It created a danger for the students and forced teachers to spend recess and PE time chasing balls.
Matthew remedied the problem by digging a trench, filling it with pea gravel for drainage and attaching heavy pressure-treated lumber along the bottom of more than 300 feet of fence, along with moving sprinkler heads and adding extra metal banding on the corners of the fence behind the backstops.
Several scouts and their parents volunteered their time to help Matthew on the project during fall break.
Matthew would like to thank all who helped him achieve this milestone. He especially thanks his scoutmasters and committee members, his friends and family, the scouts of Troop 21 and the Grass Valley Elks Lodge.
