Nevada County political races firmed up Friday for the June 8 primary election when a major filing deadline passed. But the field is not closed for late-comers.
“There's still a possibility for anyone to be a write-in candidate,” said Assistant County Clerk-Recorder Gail Smith.
Candidates will have from April 12 to Mary 25 to become write-ins. Those who filed by Friday's deadline also must have nomination signatures verified before they are deemed official, Smith said.
In three races, incumbents did not file for election, so filing deadlines for those posts are extended by law. Candidates in the county treasurer-tax collector, county assessor and Nevada City City Council races have until 5 p.m. Wednesday to file their final papers.
Appointed incumbent Assessor Jim Dal Bon, who replaced former Assessor Dale Flippin late last year, did not file by Friday, nor did Flippin.
Former Treasurer-Tax Collector Christina Dabis, who resigned at the same time last year, also did not file. She was replaced for the rest of her term by Auditor-Controller Marcia Salter, who has refiled for that office.
Treasurer-tax collector candidates Dai Meagher, Darlene Woo and Tina Vernon made Friday's deadline, and Rick Nolle has until Wednesday.
A treasurer-tax collector candidate who gets 50 percent of the vote plus one in June will win outright. Otherwise, the top two finishers head to a run-off in the November general election.
North San Juan businessman Bill Steele had said he would file for that race, but changed his mind Thursday and pulled papers to run against incumbent Hank Weston for the 4th District Supervisor's spot instead. Though Steele failed to make the 5 p.m. Friday deadline, he could still return as a write-in.
Eric Hoefler, who had announced plans to run for county superintendent of schools, also did not file by Friday; though he also could continue as a write-in candidate. That leaves appointed incumbent Superintendent Holly Hermansen unopposed for now.
The deadline in Nevada City also is extended to Wednesday because incumbent Barbara Coffman did not file Friday, according to Deputy City Clerk Corey Shaver.
Only incumbent Sally Harris had filed by Friday's deadline, Shaver said. Announced candidates Duane Strawser and Lee Griep have until Wednesday to file, unless they take the write-in route.
