Judy Arnott of Nevada City, CA, died Monday, Feb. 8, at home alongside her
husband Ed. She was 71.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 20, at Hooper and
Weaver Mortuary, 459 Hollow Way, Nevada City. A reception will follow in the
reception room.
Judith Anne Nichols was born on Jan. 19, 1939, in Oakland, Calif., to
Hollis Wolf Solon and Barney Nichols. She graduated from San Lorenzo High
School in 1957.
Growing up around the Oakland estuary, where her father built state of the art
sailing ships, she was fascinated by boating and the sea. In her spare hours
she always found time for the sea and California's beaches, often loading up
the car with her four children and heading for the shore. She frequently retreated
to the dunes for solitude.
She married Edward Arnott on July 7, 1984, in Sunnyvale, CA, where they lived
before retiring to Nevada City.
Mrs. Arnott was a retired accountant and office manager for Packer Enterprises.
She was an active member of the FireSafe Council of Nevada County, and of the
Greater Cement Hill Neighborhood Association, donating many hours to these
organizations while she was able.
She played and coached soccer while living in San Ramon, CA, and was also an
avid skier, both sports her children and grandchildren shared with her. It was
while skiing that Judy and her husband Ed met.
Mrs. Arnott is survived by Edward Arnott of Nevada City; children, Michael
Coats of Sonoma, CA, Jeffrey Coats of Scotts Valley, CA, Tracey Wood Fordahl
of Discovery Bay, CA, and Kelly Wood Clemons of Oakley, CA; siblings, Jeanne
West of Reston, VA, Cathy Bottorff and Debbie Berman of Biggs, CA, Jim Solon
of Forest Park, IL, and Mitch Nichols of Prospect, KY; and step-father, Bob
Solon of Reston, VA. Judy is also survived by grandchildren Joshua Coats,
Daniel Coats, Michael Wood, Allison Coats, Michael Coats, Kelsey Fordahl,
Hayden Fordahl, Destiny Coats, David Coats and Joy Coats; and great-grandchild,
Jackson Coats.
She was preceded in death by her father, Barney Nichols, in February 1986, and
her mother, Hollis Solon, in March 2008.
In lieu of flowers, Judy wished that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of
the Foothills or the FireSafe Council of Nevada County.
Arrangements are by Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
