It took an Oscar-winning challenge, but KVMR made its $100,000 winter membership drive goal.
Film director and best selling author Michael Moore — calling from his Traverse City, Mich., home — said he was listening online to the station Feb. 1. With the station about $5,000 short of its on-air fundraising goal, the controversial filmmaker offered to match all listener contributions until the station hit its mark.
Listeners filled station phone lines reacting to the challenge, with KVMR officials saying they raised some $6,400 from 76 callers in response to Moore. Overall, the station gathered over $103,000 for their drive, including Moore's contribution.
“For a $100 gift to KVMR, I'll come out and wash your car,” joked Moore over the air. “I could use the exercise.”
Most listeners took an offer of an autographed copy of the film director's forthcoming DVD of his recent documentary, “Capitalism: A Love Story,” for their donations.
“But we had several folks who gave $100 in hopes of having Michael wash their car, too,” said KVMR Program Director Steve Baker. “And he did say it was 10 degrees below zero where he was. This would be a heat wave compared to that.”
Moore's offer capped the most successful Monday of fundraising in KVMR's history, with nearly $21,000 in contributions.
Moore became a fan of the independent, eclectic radio station through a sister who lives in the Nevada City area.
