Jumping out to a 15-11 lead over host Lincoln Tuesday night, the Bear River Bruins looked to be in good position to knock of the second place team in the Pioneer Valley League.
But that lead was shortlived.
“We actually played a great game,” said Bear River coach Duwaine Ganskie. “But it seems to be the story of our season, we just could not get shots to fall. Two points in the second quarter did us in.”
Lincoln (19-4) answered the Bruins by outscoring Bear River 15-2 in the second period for a 26-17 lead at the half and eventually won the game 61-54.
The Bruins, playing without point guard Zach Welz (ankle), were led by Johnny Cassar's 16 points, while Jordan Beskeen and Johnny Jewett each scored 12.
Bear River (11-11 overall, 2-7 PVL) hosts Mesa Verde Thursday.

After the visiting Waves (18-6, 7-2) hit 4-of-5 free throws down the stretch, including two that pushed a 48-47 lead to the three-point final margin, Josh Ritchart took an in-bounds pass with 1.2 seconds left in his final home game at Forest Lake Christian.
The 6-foot, 7-inch senior launched a 30-foot jumper at the buzzer that just fell short of sending the game into overtime.
Ritchart and fellow senior Jason Camacho combined for 43 of FLC's 47 points. Ritchart led the way with 22 points and Camacho had 21. Sac Waldorf was led by Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten's 23 points on seven 3-pointers, while Sawyer Cole added 17 points.
“We played a pretty good game. We had our chances,” FLC coach Dave Thomas said. “We were just a hairline short. It was a tough one for us. This leaves us in pretty bad shape.”
The loss left FLC with a 10-11 overall record and 4-6 mark in the Central Valley Christian League. Rated 12th in this week's power ratings, the Falcons will need to finish strong on the road at Woodland Christian (3-18) Friday and Foresthill (4-13) Feb. 16 to stay in the top 16 in Division V for a playoff berth.
