Over 200 women from across Nevada County, neighboring Foothill communities and the Bay Area will gather Saturday at the first annual Passion Into Action Women's Conference presented by See Jane Do.
Passion Into Action speaks to the challenges everyday women are facing around the world — from running your own business while caring for yourself and your family members to cultivating balanced relationships and community involvement.
Passion Into Action is creating meaningful connections, encouraging collaboration among women of all-ages, all the while cultivating one another's passions. This conference is unique in that it highlights real women with real solutions who can provide tactical guidance and a network that will bring each of us support.
Passion Into Action features keynote speakers Nina Simons, considered by many as the godmother of the 21st century environmental movement, renowned women's rights activist Gloria Feldt, and former United States Ambassador on the Status of Women Linda Tarr-Whelan. In addition to these inspiring and powerful speakers, Passion Into Action will have 15 workshops lead by local business owners, professionals, teachers, speakers, writers, and coaches.
“I think movements toward change are almost always grassroots movements, made possible by ordinary people who've had enough. ‘Everyday women' are the ones who will change the world, one household, one neighborhood, one county, one country at a time,” said poet Molly Fisk, one of the workshop leaders participating in the conference.
Women (and men) of all backgrounds are invited to attend. And it's all right if you haven't found your passion either. Passion Into Action is for anyone looking to connect with and build community, hear the stories of other like-minded women and redefine herself.
“It's really important for women to come together in communities of support, knowledge, and experience,” said Nancy Shanteau, a writing coach and another Passion Into Action workshop leader. “When we share our passions with each other, and support each other, so much is possible. We are defining a new reality, where collaboration is required for leadership, and where everyone's voice matters. The work is just beginning, and many seeds are planted when we come together.”
A portion of the conference's proceeds will go towards Women of Worth (WOW), a local nonprofit organization founded in 2001 by Sandy Schmidt, a survivor of domestic violence with a passion to see the lives of abused women and children restored.
WOW assists victims of domestic violence and families in crisis with shelter, furniture and household items, educational and career assistance, transportation, mentoring, and referrals, and also the Women's Earth Alliance (WEA) based in San Francisco, which helps build the mechanisms for women in underserved communities to launch income-generating projects that lift their communities out of poverty; to create broad-based alliances within the global movement for environmental justice and sustainability; and to advance their leadership as agents of change.
