James Harold LaRue died Jan. 12 in Grass Valley.
He was 61.
A memorial will be held from 8 a.m. until evening on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Ridge Stop Café in North San Juan.
He was born Sept. 24, 1948, to James LaRue and Lorraine Simnick LaRue in Harvey, Ill., the eldest of five children.
He graduated from Harvey High School and studied electronics at Prairie State College.
Mr. LaRue loved his community and being in the wilderness. He loved geology and the study of local petroglyphs, and found inspiration in nature.
He also enjoyed painting, music and producing rock and roll shows at local venues. Yachts, catamarans and sailboats were his passion, as were Jensen Healeys and their restoration.
He was a member of the Mariposa Waldorf School Board.
Mr. LaRue's connection with his loved ones and this beautiful land helped heal and sustain him through his battle with leukemia. His family gives thanks to life and love In his memory.
Mr. LaRue is survived by his brothers, John, of Dalton, Ill., Jay and Jeffrey, both of Chicago Heights, Ill.; ex-wife, Renata Hennell, of Mapleton, Ore.; and daughter Lexis LaRue, who is living in Los Angeles, but will return to the Grass Valley area after completing college.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lorraine LaRue, and his sister Judy LaRue.
Special thanks are given to the intensive care nursing staff, the Oncology Center and Robyn Arlo of O'LaLa Farms.
