A 53-year-old East Linda man with a long criminal history was arrested late Monday on suspicion of robbing and shooting a clerk at Lally's Market on North Beale Road.
His alleged accomplice is being sought, a Yuba County Sheriff's Department official said Tuesday.
Johnny Leon Trapp was arrested at his home in the 6000 block of Dunning Avenue on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery.
The robbery occurred about 6 a.m. Sunday at the market in the 1900 block of North Beale Road.
Trapp and the other suspect, 48-year-old Gerald Murphy, were identified from the market's surveillance tapes, said department spokeswoman Melanie Oakes.
Murphy, a Yuba-Sutter parolee, remained at large. He is white, 5-feet-8, weighs 165 pounds and has brown eyes and brown hair.
Oakes did not say which man is suspected of shooting the 22-year-old clerk in the side of the head. The clerk, whose name was withheld, was released Monday from Rideout Memorial Hospital.
Both suspects are familiar to the Sheriff's Department, she said.
Trapp was arrested last May in Yuba County on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon.
In June 2002, a Yuba County judge sentenced Trapp to four years in prison after he pleaded no contest to a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon.
He was accused of attacking a man with a whiskey bottle and a machete in September 2001 on Dunning Avenue.
The probation report prepared for the 2002 sentencing noted that Trapp's criminal record "spans 30 years and numerous prison commitments."
Trapp, according to the probation report, had nine prior felony convictions and 10 parole violations as of 2002.
His first felony conviction as an adult was in 1974 in Oregon when he was convicted of robbing a Medford grocery store. He was sentenced to four years in prison.
His first Yuba County felony conviction came a few years later. In November 1978, the probation report said, Trapp went into the parking lot of the Denny's Restaurant in Marysville, smashed his way into a Sheriff's Department patrol car and made off with two briefcases from the backseat.
A few hours later, Trapp and a juvenile went to a used car lot at Fifth and G streets, removed the keys from a 1974 Buick Regal, had duplicate keys made and returned the originals to the lot. That night, they stole the Buick, the probation report said.
Trapp was sentenced to 44 months in state prison.
In the following years, he was sentenced to state prison for burglary, being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm from a vehicle and three drug convictions, the probation report said.
In the current case, besides attempted murder and robbery, Trapp is facing charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of ammunition by an ex-felon. Bail was set at $1 million.
