Former Nevada County Supervisor Sue Horne took out initial papers Monday morning to run for Assessor.
Horne is expected to run against current Supervisor Ted Owens for the position, which came open at the end of the year with Assessor Dale Flippin's resignation.
“I was at the elections office at 8 a.m.,” Horne said. She then went to Citizens Bank to set up her campaign account, followed by a trip to the Secretary of State's office in Sacramento to get a candidate identification number.
“My hope is to serve Nevada County,” said Horne, who lost the primary election in 2008 for the GOP's nomination for the 3rd District Assembly spot to current state Assemblyman Dan Logue (R-Linda.)
“My heart is there and I want to serve my community,” Horne said. She first did so as Nevada County Supervisor for the 2nd District from 2001 through 2008.
Horne said she will work for state Assemblyman Jim Nielsen, (R-Gerber) until the end of January, when she will leave to start her campaign. Horne said she will follow the process and file more paperwork in February to make her candidacy official.
The Assessor's position came open in November, when Flippin said he was stepping down with one year left in office.
Neither Horne or Owens filed to become the interim Assessor, saying it would be unfair to ask the board to cast votes in the matter on current or former colleagues.
Former Marin County Assessor Jim Dal Bon was selected interim Assessor by the board in December. The Rough and Ready resident said he would simply fulfill Flippin's 2010 obligation to help the county out and not file to run for the office.
