Nevada Union sophomores Mason Bond, left, and Jeremiah Newman took first and second place in the
sophomore boys division of the NorCal High School Mountain Bike Race at Folsom Lake Sunday.
Para-sailors, jet skiers, swimmers, people on rafts and in boats all made for a lovely day of water sports at Folsom Lake Sunday. It was also a near-perfect day for the NU Mountain Bike team which competed in the fourth race of the NorCal League and took second place out of 11 Division I teams.
Standing out in the sophomore race were Mason Bond and Jeremiah Newman, who bested a field of 34 other riders to capture Nevada Unions first ever 1–2 finish, a scant 15 seconds apart with times of 1:29:42 and 1:30:01. Also competing in the 18 mile race was Lucas Turner who placed 16th with a time of 1:44.
The varsity boys, racing for a grueling 24 miles, were led by Chris Convis (7th), Greg Hermansen, (25th) and Casey Sanchez (28th), who suffered a broken chain on his second lap.
The NU varsity girls were again represented by Christine Weir, who placed fourth, six minutes behind the leader with a time of 1:42 over the 18 mile course. Racing for the JV girls was Jillian Downs, who broke into the elite top 10 with a 10th place finish in a field of 29 riders over a 12 mile course. Teammate Maya Ramos, racing for the sophomores, placed 19th while Robyn Morgan was 22nd over the 12-mile course. For the freshmen girls, Lindsey Hayes placed 16th for Nevada Union.
The JV riders, competing on a sandy and rutted 18 mile track, were paced by Trevor Thomassen (10th), Lawrence Saiyo (12th), and David Lowe (13th). Rounding out the field in this tough JV race with 55 riders were Max Floyd (23rd), Frank Piner (34th), Evan Thibodeau (44th), Buddy Newman (45th), Julian Smallwood (47th) and Tyler Hayes (48th).
In the freshman division Steve Baldock retained the overall leaders jersey, finishing third in a field of 50 riders. Finishing in the top 10 for the first time was Tim Warmerdam (9th), followed closely by Dillon Virva (11th) and Julian Eisen (14th). ) Completing this strong freshmen showing were Jack Mann (25th), Aidan Arata (42nd) and Sean Walik (44th).
The Miners next race is May 17 at the State Championships at Boggs Mountain, in North Napa Valley near Clearlake. For the first time teams from Southern California will send their best to compete making this a true state race. The course at Boggs is much like the terrain at Empire Mine, with plenty of granite rock and pine trees; the NU team will feel right at home for this, their final NorCal race of the season.
