This is an open letter to Congress: My name is Vince Rapini. I am an American citizen, a Californian and a voter. I am 45-years old. I have a wife and two children. I own a home with a mortgage, my cars are paid for, and I buy my own health insurance. I am a small business owner. Prior to the current recession, I had four employees; now I have two. It is a day-to-day struggle to stay in business and pay my bills. I have never had as much fear for the future of our country as I do right now.
Until recently I knew we had differences, yet I was certain that Congress had the best interests of the American people at heart. But recent events and your reaction to them have disheartened me. It is becoming clearer with each piece of legislation that you pass, that you do not have the best interest of the country in mind and that you have no regard for the oath that you took to uphold the Constitution. As you pass more appropriations bills and send our country further into debt, I wonder if you ever consider how history will remember you. Are you simply part of the current socialist movement trying to dismantle our economy, or will you be part of the counter revolution that gives us back our freedoms?
For the better part of 50 years, our country fought communism around the globe, only to elect a quasi-Marxist to the presidency last fall. He has championed all of the ideological concepts like social justice and wealth redistribution, and has surrounded himself with radicals.
Their ideological philosophies (Marxism, Maoism, and communism) go against the very fabric of our country. This is the land of the free and the home of the brave! Yet, Congress has accommodated the president's every whim. He nationalized banking, insurance and automobile companies while you did nothing. Now you join him in attempting to regulate CO2 (which is necessary for plants and trees to survive), as well as take over health care, one-sixth of the American economy. You do all this showing blatant disregard for our Constitution, the democratic process, and massive citizen opposition. Is this appropriate? Does this smack of totalitarianism?
I do not believe that the purpose of “Cap and Trade” legislation is to improve the environment. It defies logic that mankind will destroy the global environment unless our federal government raises taxes. The earth survived for billions of years before the U.S. Congress arrived to save it, and it will continue to survive whether you triple the cost of electricity or not.
I also don't believe that health care legislation will improve health or lower the cost of health care in this country. Moreover, there is no clause in our Constitution that allows the federal government to force its citizens to purchase health insurance or fine them (Stamp Act ring a bell?) The true purpose of both bills is to raise taxes, exert more control over the people, punish those who produce, and reward those who do not.
Why not consider deregulation? Stop infringing on our freedoms and allow free market principles to ‘right the ship.' Our country was not founded on some perversion of the “general welfare” clause. If the federal government had stuck to the powers granted by the Constitution, we would not be in the mess we are in right now.
Will you be known as the Congress that killed the American spirit?
Why not reconsider and oppose legislation that takes our freedoms and leaves a legacy of insurmountable debt to our children and their children? Because of the current recession, many of us who for years have ignored the corruption and secrecy in Washington are now paying attention. You can only beat a dog for so long before it bites you back.
We will take action to see that our country and its founding ideals are not lost with the 111th Congress. We will find representation that respects the will of the people — that champions free speech, the right to keep and bear arms, and the pursuit (not guarantee) of happiness.
